Vision:

To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes."

Dean Kamen, Founder

Mission:

Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.

FIRST History

FIRST was founded in 1989 by the renowned inventor Dean Kamen. The aim of FIRST is to inspire students to careers in math, science, and technology through a fun and engaging robotics competition, which provides students with the ability to meet one-on-one with industry leaders and engineers.

The initial FIRST Robotics Competition comprised of 28 teams competiting in a New Hampshire high school gymnasium. The ensuing years brought rapid growth to the program, to include over 30,000 students, 1,300 teams from 7 countries, competing at 37 Regional Events, culminating with the World Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia.

Gracious Professionalism - The Backbone of Competition at FIRST Robotics

Dr. Woodie Flowers, FIRST National Advisor and Pappalardo Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, coined the term "Gracious Professionalism."

Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.

With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.

In the long run, Gracious Professionalism is part of pursuing a meaningful life. One can add to society and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing one has acted with integrity and sensitivity.

2009 Homework

Dean Kamen, Founder of FIRST, each year assigns homework to all of the FRC Robotics teams, in an effort to further the reach of First Robotics.

In 2009, Dean asked all teams to compile a list of alumni for the last 18 years, with the hope that in 2011, the 20th Anniversary of First Robotics, all could possibly get together. This would also allow First to track its reach, to find out where its members ended up, and how each uses the First Principle's in their line of work.

As a team that is 8 years old, the task is easier for us than some older teams. Each year at the end of the competition season, we hold our year end banquet. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with our alumni, and to let them know how the year went.

We look forward to completing this homework task, so that we can turn it in on time!
